Discrimination based on color, caste, culture, language, nationality and religion has raised an issue in many a part of the world. The recent sporadic violent incidents involving Indian students, mostly in Australia, and a few in Canada are condemnable but invite our attention to the whole issue of prejudices that people keep. We Indians are not behind anybody for observing prejudices.
These discriminative patterns of behavior has its roots in one’s culture and upbringing. The Colonial period had made things worse for us. Equality and liberty are more often found in the political vocabulary and on the pages of documents like constitutions. More than sixty years after the Constitution was drafted there are still some privileged classes in our society, in spite of the literacy and scientific advancements we have achieved. We have not learned to look at others as fellows and equals. We should treat the issue at home before going abroad with prejudiced mindset. We should learn to respect others’ right for freedom and equality and not to encroach into it. Adult literacy classes for the non-literate and high school education should be made compulsory and accessible. There should be a change in our primary education system itself.
I am sure there are others who think on similar lines. http://tinyurl.com/luugdc
